Consider getting an estimate from a plumber before you decide to do this yourself. To be on the safe side, research what is needed to have a sewage ejector pump installed legally before you begin. Permits are typically required for work on septic or sewer lines, because improper installation can result in a considerable mess. ![]() Local building codes and permit requirements may vary from one community to another. If you plan on installing an ejector pump, it would be a wise idea to check with the local building department first. The sump basin’s top is sealed in order to prevent waste or smell from escaping. The sewage ejector pump’s outlet pipe is usually 2 inches in diameter and connects to a 3-inch sewer main line. In a sump pit, the vent may connect to an existing vent stack or run up and through the roof. Requirements For Sewage Ejector Pump InstallationĪn ejector pump installation requires a vent to equalize pressure during pumping and to let sewer gasses escape. Such light is said to be unpolarized because it is composed of many waves with all possible directions of polarization. The Sun and many other light sources produce waves in which E (and B, though it is not shown) are not preferentially oriented – they exist in every direction perpendicular to the direction of propagation (see Figure 2.3.11). Watch the first 6 minutes of the video below to see a practical overview of plane polarized light, using crossed polarizers, and how a third polarizer (which is how many minerals act) can be used to increase light output from crossed polarizers.Įlectromagnetic waves are transverse waves consisting of varying electric and magnetic fields that oscillate perpendicular to the direction of propagation and perpendicular to each other. What is polarization? How is it produced? What are some of its uses? The answers to these questions are related to the wave character of light. Polaroids have this ability because of a wave characteristic of light called polarization. They have a special ability to cut the glare of light reflected from water or glass. Polaroid sunglasses are familiar to most of us. This, too, is the same change in direction as for light going from slow to fast. ![]() When going from the grass to the footpath, the front wheels can move faster and the mower changes direction as shown. This is the same change in direction as for light when it goes from a fast medium to a slow one. Going from the footpath to grass, the front wheels are slowed and pulled to the side as shown. In both cases, you can imagine what happens by thinking about pushing a lawn mower from a footpath onto grass, and vice versa. Conversely, as shown in Figure 2.3.9(b), the direction of the ray moves away from the perpendicular when it speeds up. Note that as shown in Figure 2.3.9(a), the direction of the ray moves closer to the perpendicular when it slows down. This means that the speed of light is less in medium 2 than in medium 1. In the situations shown in Figure 2.3.9 medium 2 has a greater index of refraction than medium 1. The change in the speed of light is related to the indices of refraction of the media involved. (Some of the incident light will be reflected from the surface, but for now we will concentrate on the light that is transmitted.) The change in direction of the light ray depends on how the speed of light changes. The angles are measured relative to a perpendicular to the surface at the point where the light ray crosses it. The paths are exactly reversible.įigure 2.3.9 shows how a ray of light changes direction when it passes from one medium to another. This is analogous to what happens when a lawn mower goes from grass to footpath. (b) A ray of light moves away from the perpendicular when it speeds up. This is analogous to what happens when a lawn mower goes from a footpath to grass. (a) A ray of light moves closer to the perpendicular when it slows down. The speed of light is greater in medium 1 than in medium 2 in the situations shown here. The change in direction of a light ray depends on how the speed of light changes when it crosses from one medium to another. The incoming ray is called the incident ray, the outgoing ray is called the refracted ray, and the associated angles are the incident angle and the refracted angle, respectively. Here n 1 and n 2 are the indices of refraction for media 1 and 2, and θ 1 and θ 2are the angles between the rays and the perpendicular in media 1 and 2. The law of refraction is stated in equation form as: The exact mathematical relationship is the law of refraction, or Snell’s law, after the Dutch mathematician Willebrord Snell (1591–1626), who discovered it in 1621. For a ray at a given incident angle, a large change in speed causes a large change in direction and thus a large change in angle. The amount that a light ray changes its direction depends both on the incident angle and the amount that the speed changes. ![]() ![]() Louis (STL) - Lambert St.Experience the getaway you’ve been dreaming of when you plan a flight with Southwest. ![]() ![]() How are Cover Pumps Measured?Ĭover pumps for your swimming pool cover are measured, or sized, by how many gallons per hour (GPH) they pump. The proper way to operate a cover pump is explained in this article. The automatic ones also tend to be more energy efficient. All this refers to is if it shuts itself on or off automatically or if you have to go and flip the on/off switch. Also, as mentioned above, you run the risk of damage while the water sits on your swimming pool cover.Ĭover pumps come in 2 different styles: manual and automatic. Sure, you can hire a swimming pool company to remove the water at the beginning of season, but this can be costly. What is a Cover Pump?Ī cover pump is a piece of equipment that removes the water from atop the swimming pool cover, both quickly, and effectively. The way we remove this accumulation is with a piece of equipment called a cover pump. Since water has a lot of weight, letting it sit there can ruin your cover with pinholes, stretching and worst case, rips or tears. These solid covers, since they don’t let water through, accumulate water on the surface. It also makes it easier to remove when the time comes. Most people opt for a solid cover, which are made of plastic or vinyl and keeps not only dirt and debris out of the swimming pool, but water/snow as well. These covers can be made of mesh, which allow the water/snow to pass through, but not dirt and debris.
